Corners first, then the line, then the rest of it
A ranch rail run isn't built picket by picket the way a privacy fence is. The corner and end posts go in first, set deep and set plumb, because every other post in the run takes its line from them. Once the corners are true, a string line gets pulled between them and the field posts are set to that string, not to each other. Skip that step and every small error in one post compounds into the next, so by the time you're forty posts down the line the fence has a visible bow in it. Three rail is also the run people see from the furthest away, which means it's the run where a small mistake shows the most. A wandering line on a privacy fence is hidden by the fence itself. A wandering line on a pasture fence is visible from the road.
Gates a tractor can actually get through
A ranch rail gate carries more weight than a picket gate and it gets opened by machinery, not just a person walking through. We build the opening to what actually has to pass it, a tractor, a truck, a trailer, rather than defaulting to a walk-through width and hoping. Hinges and posts get sized to carry that weight without sagging, because a ranch gate that drags in the dirt after a season isn't a small annoyance, it's a gate you have to lift every single time you use it. If the fence line is also marking a property boundary rather than just holding livestock, we talk through that before anything goes in the ground, because a fence set on the wrong line is expensive to move twice.

What a quarter mile of fence reveals
Most fence problems hide up close and disappear at a distance. Ranch rail does the opposite. Stand back from a long run and any dip, lean, or drift in the line reads immediately, the same way a crooked picture frame catches your eye across a room even when it wouldn't up close. That's the standard we build to on a frontage run, because it's the standard the road holds you to whether you asked for it or not. We've also gone back and corrected posts other crews drove straight through a customer's sprinkler and septic lines, so before anything goes in the ground we ask what's already buried there.
