Every foot of fence line just has to stand still. A gate has to swing, latch, hold its shape under its own weight, and keep doing all three after a thousand openings in Georgia heat and humidity. That's why most gate problems on a fence line show up at the gate and nowhere else. We don't fit a stock leaf to whatever gap is left over once the fence is up. We measure the actual opening, single walk gate or double drive, and build the frame to that width. A single gate covers the walk path most people use every day. A double drive gate splits down the middle wide enough for a mower, a trailer or a truck to get through, which matters if you're the one mowing your own back yard.
Hardware, bracing, and the ground underneath the post
A wide gate leaf is heavy, and hinges and latches sized for a narrow walk gate will sag under a double drive leaf inside a year. We size hardware to the weight the gate actually has to carry, and we brace the frame diagonally so it holds square instead of racking into a diamond over time, which is the usual reason an old gate stops latching. The ground plays its part too. Posts that heave or settle even a little will drop a gate out of true, and a gate that latched fine in spring can bind by summer on the same hardware. One customer wanted a cut in window on their gate so the dogs inside could see who was out front, and that's exactly what got built, because a custom gate means built to what you actually asked for.

Resizing and realigning gates already in the ground
Not every gate job is a new install. We've resized gates that were built too narrow for the vehicle the owner actually needed to get through, and realigned gates that dragged or wouldn't latch anymore after years of settling. Sometimes the fix is a new hinge post set at the right depth. Sometimes the leaf itself needs rebuilding because the frame racked out of square long before the hardware gave out. Either way, we look at the whole gate, not just the part that's obviously broken, before we tell you what it needs.
